Abstrakti

The article examines early television sets in Finland as material objects manufactured and consumed during the first decades of television broadcasting in the country - the 1950s and 1960s. The study discusses the feelings and attitudes of educated and 'culture-conscious' people regarding the new medium as well as the ideals associated with technology and decorating the home, in particular the living room. Of particular interest are television models with doors. Their production ceased by the early 1970s, prompting the question: how can we explain this phenomenon which lasted a mere ten to fifteen years?.
