Abstrakti

Originally, sustainable development was a policy concept formulated to emphasize the importance of rational use of natural resources in meeting basic human needs and to foster environmentally responsible economic development. Today, the concept continues to be widely used in both policy development and international cooperation circles, where its scope now extends beyond environmental issues. Academic interest in sustainable development has evolved into “sustainability science” and studying the social dimensions of sustainable development continues to pose a theoretical and analytical challenge. This entry draws on a case study from the Arctic illustrating multiple dimensions of socially sustainable development.
