N1 - Dr. Francis Joy is a post-doctoral researcher and member of the Arctic Anthropology research team at the University of Lapland Arctic Center, Rovaniemi, Finland. Since 2005 Francis has been engaged in the study of Sámi culture and has published a broad range of papers on the subject matters of Sámi shamanism, Cosmology and Art, which includes the study of prehistoric rock art, sacred sites and links with Sámi cosmology illustrated on sacred Sámi drums from the seventeenth century. In addition, he also teaches on the Arctic Studies Program at the Arctic Center, University of Lapland. In 2022, Francis was invited to join the editorial board of the Journal of Northern Studies. The journal is published by Umeå University and Royal Academy, the Royal Skyttean Society, Sweden. Contact: fjoy@ulapland.fi Thora Herrmann, DPhil, is a post-doctoral researcher at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental research (UFZ), and the German Centre for integrative biodiversity research (iDiv), Germany. She is a trained cultural geographer and has worked with and for First Nation, Inuit, Mapuche, and Sámi communities in action-research projects on people-place relationships, nature-culture inter-linkages and bio-cultural diversity conservation strategies. She has been collaborating with UAPASHKUSS since the organization’s founding in its efforts to recognize and protect Innu sacred natural sites.
