This chapter explores the role of prototyping in User Experience (UX) research, a field that goes beyond usability to consider both utilitarian and hedonic aspects. This chapter serves as a guide to a range of prototyping techniques, from low fidelity to high fidelity. It discusses the advantages and limitations of these methods, providing insights into their appropriate use based on research goals and practical constraints. This chapter is organized around key topics such as motivations for prototyping, low-fidelity, and high-fidelity methods, the Wizard-of-Oz method, and the use of prototypes in user studies.
