Abstrakti
In the past, history was used to build national identity, but it is now viewed as a multifaceted phenomenon with different perspectives. The 2016 national curriculum for basic education places more emphasis on local history to build student identities. This approach is problematic, as this emphasis is neither standardised nor monitored in local curricula. My research question in this article is: How has local history and Northern cultural history been written, or left unwritten, in the history curricula of Lapland? I also evaluate how these results affect the application of curricula and the work of teachers. The source material consists of seventeen elementary and secondary schools' history curricula in the Lapland region. The basis for my research is the her-meneutic tradition of cultural historical research. The approach includes studying the text and its context, interpreting the text, and analysing its meanings. The research draws conclusions about the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of local history curricula.
