Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) are the remains of various types of organisms that can be found in palynological samples during microscopy. They can be used in palaeoecological, palaeoclimatic, biostratigraphic and archaeological studies throughout the geological and archaeological record. NPPs can tell a more detailed story about the environment and the interactions of different actors and processes affecting environmental change. The most commonly used NPPs in Quaternary palaeoecology are the dung fungal spores that allow the study of the history of herbivore presence and pastoralism.
