Laajentumisen moraali : Euroopan unionin laajentumisargumentaatio moraaliteorioiden ja kosmopolitanismin valossa

The objective of this paper is to analyse European Union enlargement argumentation with regard to Croatia and Turkey. The main normative ethical theories providing the basis for analysis include utilitarianism, deontological ethics and virtue ethics, and a special attention will be paid to the principles of cosmopolitanism and communitarianism with regard to the theories. In the analysis it will be shown that communitarian utilitarian approach is mainly used as a justification for enlargement. Secondly, deontological ethics provides the manner in which enlargement should be conducted, but this does not reflect cosmopolitan norms. Instead, the communitarian commitments of the Union are deemed important, even in the midst of a financial crisis. Finally, virtue ethics serves as a rhetorical tool indicating kinship and portray Europeanness as an exclusive feature to be internalised in the accession.
