Abstrakti

The old, ancient forests of Lapland were places where people have lived for thousands of years. They were home to different Sámi groups who are Europe’s Indigenous people and who lived in forests and survived on nomadic reindeer herding, hunting and fishing until they were converted to Christianity which brought about great change to Sámi traditions and culture. What remains of old forests also extends to mountain areas, rivers and lakes and so these in addition to dwelling places have also formed the foundation for the pre-Christian religion of the Sámi, which was animistic, and more recently, for the Finns who migrated to the north of the country several centuries ago.
