ABSTRACT
Global warming affects the Arctic area four times faster than other parts of the world. This article shows how students living in Arctic region – in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland – visualize the future of the North. The experiment took place in December 2022. The article shows 23 artworks of the student teachers at the university of Lapland. The students searched for information about climate change, chose an individual approach to the theme based on their readings, and created a painting showing how the area looks like in 2073 including an explanation text.
Most of the artworks dealt with the problems caused by melting of the glaciers or changing weather conditions. These make both people and animals suffer in numerous ways.
We also had small-group-discussions of the topic. Most of the students were worried but some even very anxious because of the situation. Most of the students had done some changes in their lifestyle, but many felt that individuals cannot solve the world-wide problem.
KEY WORDS: Arctic, climate change, global warming, student teacher, visual art education
