Images of Sorrow and Hope: Children’s Drawings of Everyday Life during Reconstruction.
In my presentation I describe and discuss how schoolchildren in Finnish Lapland dealt with war, peace and reconstruction after the Lapland War (1944-45). I illustrate this process using three drawings in which children depicted their experiences and perceptions of the world around them.
The drawings, made in school, reflect the children’s world of experience and the socio-cultural surroundings in which the images were produced. The form and content of the drawings reveal the influence of school conventions, educational aims, other images and personal experiences.
The question I wish to explore by studying the drawings is how a child builds up his/her conventional and collective identity as well as his/her personal story.
