'Geopolitics' of the Viking Age? actors, factors and space

'Geopolitics' is commonly understood to focus on physical space, resources and (state) power. In addition to this classical geopolitics, however, there are other schools of thought (of geopolitics) with a broader approach that takes into consideration a wider range of factors. Among these factors are 'new' actors, identity, knowledge, interrelations between power and knowledge, and the 'politicization' of physical space. These critical approaches to geopolitics are rather new. In this article they are applied to the Viking Age as a historical period. One of the conclusions is that 'Mobility' as a combination of several factors much explains the age and the success of the Vikings to cover and control rather large area in North Atlantic and Europe.
