Emoji Keyboard as a Feedback Collection Tool

We present an emoji-based input device designed for collecting feedback in public spaces, such as exhibitions and public installations. The device enables users to select multiple emojis from a predefined set, providing an expressive, fast, and engaging feedback mechanism. This click all that apply (CATA) approach allows for richer data collection compared to the ubiquitous emoji rating scale inputs. Our prototype was developed in the context of the just green transition, specifically exploring citizen reactions to the placement of windmills in natural landscapes, a topic that often generates conflicting opinions. The emoji keyboard offers an ideal method of data collection for in-the-wild studies, where traditional surveys may feel intrusive. This paper details the keyboard’s design and construction and its potential for feedback collection in human-computer interaction (HCI) research.
