This paper introduces the US Central Foreign Policy Files (1973–1979) as a novel archival resource for examining the negotiations leading to Greenland’s Home Rule in 1979. By analyzing these files alongside other historical sources, including the minority report by Steen Folke, a member of the Home Rule Commission, this study highlights Denmark’s strategic efforts to safeguard its interests during the Home Rule negotiations (1975–1978). In line with research questions regarding Greenland’s integration into the Danish Kingdom in 1953, this paper raises concerns about the Danish State’s emphasis on maintaining the unity of the realm as a foundation for the Home Rule. The findings underscore the need for further research into Denmark’s strategic priorities and their impact on Greenland’s self-determination.
