Abstrakti

In this book, we have collected descriptions of people’s means and routines of outdoor activity as adapted to sub-zero temperatures and the physically limiting or enabling features of accumulating snow and ice. The impact of a heating climate is a great concern for those utilizing the enabling features of prolonged winter weather, and the need for continuous adaptation will increase in the future. We conclude this edited volume with (1) the understanding that living with the Arctic winter weather has changed significantly during the period we consider as ‘modern’, and practices of ‘weathering’ will continue to adapt. We have identified (2) the influence of modern technologies as enablers to overcome many of the limitations set by the cold climate. Together with regular infrastructure maintenance, Arctic outdoor activity is much practiced and much appreciated in the Finnish context. And (3), as the study of everyday practices is not very established, methodological choices are adaptive throughout the chapters of this edited volume, and aim to capture the lived experience of Arctic and subarctic dwellers in the here and now.
