2. Marine Pollution: B. Vessel Source Pollution

Vessel source pollution remains a significant problem. While progress has been made in recent years, more measures are both needed and possible. The past year was dominated by the realization in the shipping industry that the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2016 announcement to introduce stricter sulphur emission limits globally, as early as 2020, will have a significant impact on the industry. It appears questionable whether the shipping industry will be able to fulfill the technical requirements, which will enter into force on 1 January 2020. Also, the issue of nitrogen oxide has been tackled while plastic waste and the dumping of sludge remain unresolved issues.
