The Finnish-CAVIAR project is a part of the Pan-Arctic IPY CAVIAR project undertaken by a multidisciplinary, international team representing all the Arctic nations (Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, USA, Canada, Russia). CAVIAR project is a significant effort of the northern research community to study community adaptation and vulnerability to cumulative changes across the Arctic.

The research within the CAVIAR project focuses on the Arctic communities in Russia impacted by disastrous events – flooding in pastoralist villages in North East Siberia and accidents on ice in reindeer herders' community in the Barents tundra. Based on observations from anthropological fieldwork, the study analyses how rural residents assess and 'process' destructive consequences in their interaction with environmental changes and multiple governance scales.
