Migration Studies in the Global Arctic is an international research network that was initially established in 2022. It is committed to advancing interdisciplinary migration research as part of global change and development in the Global Arctic. It gathers migration scholars from various backgrounds and disciplines – including, for example, sociology, social work, development studies, political science, international relations, administrative sciences, tourism research, art and design, and gender studies – to study a broad spectrum of migration related themes that are of growing relevance in the Arctic region.

Our objectives are to

  • initiate a collective space for epistemic dialogue and interdisciplinary research on migration issues
  • fill in gaps of understanding around the effects of global migration flows in the Global Arctic
  • develop novel perspectives and approaches for migration research, including participatory and arts-based methods
  • broaden interaction and collaboration between migration scholars and migrant communities, including refugees and asylum seekers
  • produce and disseminate evidence-based knowledge to advance sustainable immigration and integration policies, with special attention to impacts of migration on labour markets, educational outcomes and social cohesion
  • identify benefits and obstacles in sharing research-based knowledge with policymakers and other stakeholders
  • offer new proposals for addressing immigration and integration related challenges and opportunities
