Aida/ma, the gap or in-between space — as described by Japanese philosopher and phenomenologist Kiyokazu Washida – is a space where relationality and care for self and others become negotiated and cultivated. In this presentation, I explore how it can serve as a critical component of educational practice. It situates walking as an educational practice that fluctuates, mobilises, and recreates the aida/ma within educational relations that bring together teachers, students, and other human and non-human beings. Drawing on tourism field courses in Wakayama (Japan), Laugarvatn (Iceland), and Lapland (Finland), I examine how walking can facilitate the (re)emergence of aida/ma in these educational settings and consider its role in teaching tourism in times of ecological crisis and concern.
