Design for future-proofing helps us to understand, even prototype and test things that do not exist yet. It’s about investigating concepts and solutions that would work in future and stand against time. We are increasingly aware of the planetary context that we are part of and the increasing complexities that environmental and social challenges pose. The complexities need solving and a holistic view. Worldbuilding is about crafting future worlds as imagined. It can help you in investigating experiences and services in future contexts. Design gives us tools for future-proofing, and together with future studies this can help us in back-casting and creating logical pathways. Together, design and future studies work as a strategic tool that enables decision-making and navigating among complexities. Design for future-proofing is a competence to a designer whose ability is to lean forward, and look beyond, even guide the strategy-making.
