How can adult education and pedagogy take part in fostering social and behavioral change to promote sustainable lifestyles, societies, and cultures? In addition to creating new sustainable course contents, educators need to reassess pedagogy i.e. the art and science of teaching. Method and practice of teaching reflects paradigms and understanding about human beings and how information and connections to the existing surroundings are achieved. Selected pedagogies influence learners’ information processing, knowledge formation, understanding and insight. Therefore, a paradigm shift in education can only occur through a profound assessment and understanding of what it is to be human and what kind of pedagogy support paradigm shift toward sustainable and positive future. This presentation delivers preliminary results of systematic literacy review on contemplative pedagogy. Outcomes of educational interventions identified in the research are mirrored and discussed in relation to anticipated future skills and sustainability skills and competencies.
Preliminary results suggest that contemplative pedagogy has strong potential to support self-awareness, compassion, professional development, well-being and emotional regulation, interconnectedness, reflective skills, creativity, and expressive capacity. These human qualities strongly link to future and sustainability skills identified various future and sustainability frameworks, in which qualities and competencies such as empathy, self-awareness, creativity and collaboration are emphasized. This makes contemplative pedagogy noteworthy pedagogical method for supporting future- and sustainability competencies and it should be noted more in educational practices.
