Join Dr Shaun Fitzgerald and guest as he guides us to the options we could follow to cool a warming planet. We need to go much harder in reducing our emissions, and all our efforts will certainly slow down the rate of change compared with a do-nothing path. However, we are already seeing significant changes such as increased severity and frequency of severe weather events, and the loss of ice from the polar regions.

In this talk, the presenters will explore various options for actually removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, discussing both nature-based and engineering-based approaches. The likely timescales involved in scaling up our efforts in emissions reduction and greenhouse gas removal are such that, unless something else is done, we may see irreversible changes in areas such as the Arctic and Antarctica. What else could be done?

They will finish by looking at some of the ideas that could potentially enable us to refreeze the polar regions, and buy us time to get the fundamental root cause of climate change – greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere – sorted.
