The concept of new genre Arctic art refers to contemporary artistic practices - interventions, performances, installations, media art, and community collaborations—that are participatory, activist, and responsive to urgent social and environmental concerns. These practices mark a shift from object-based public art toward socially engaged and often politically motivated forms of expression. In the Arctic, they address issues such as climate change, natural resource extraction, and cultural self-determination, whilst also celebrating the beauty of living in close connection with land, communities, and ancestral knowledge.Art in the Arctic diverges fundamentally from the dualistic and colonial traditions of Western art. It does not separate art, design and craft, nor is it created solely for art’s sake. This presentation considers the work of Land artists including Timo Jokela and Antti Stöckell. As an addendum, some embroidered work, which expresses the significance of environmental stewardship in the Arctic, will be discussed.
The Land art to be considered integrates local ways of making, land-based learning, environmental awareness and community engagement. Artists and art educators in the North have developed methods including snow and ice sculpting that draw directly on natural materials and ecocultural knowledge. These practices foster cultural resilience, community belonging and revitalisation, which positions Arctic art and art education as crucial forces in shaping sustainable and culturally grounded Arctic futures.
