Students of Primary Teacher Education Produced “State of Emergency” -Videos about COVID-19

Abstract

The future primary school teachers in Finland will also teach visual arts for the grades 1-6. In their Master of Education studies, they only have a little 5 ECTS course in visual art education that is compulsory for all. In this course I try to teach the basics for successful school art teaching. This spring the exercise to learn to make a video and edit it was planned to be done in groups using the iPads of the university and having teacher’s support. They had already made an “emaki” (kind of screenplay) that they could not use as the papers were locked inside the university premises. Instead, Covid-19 made students to work alone and with the tools available at home. I gave them as theme “State of emergency” to help them express their own perspective to this issue. The results varied from humoristic to serious ones, from instructive to horror film type scenarios. Many students chose to use music that made it impossible to publish most of the videos. But in our closed university workspace we could share the productions that showed each student´s unique approach.
