Abstract

In this article we examine the threat of death related to separation by analysing familicides and post-separation
stalking against women in the frame of gendered violence. The qualitative study shows four common features
of these phenomena indicating the threat of death within separation: 1) holding relationship, 2) violence
manifested as coercive control, 3) the threat of fatal act and its different triggers and 4) unidentified threat
of serious violence. The interpretation of the common features emphasises that all authorities working
with women and children – staff at the kindergarten, schools, social and health services, and the police –
take responsibility for protecting the victims.
