Abstract
This project aims to show feminine universe in geographically, socially, politically, economically, and culturally different contexts through the works of two artists: Finnish visual art educator and photographer Seija Ulkuniemi and Cuban architect and artist Mabel Zuaznábar. We have asked the participants – women who love literature – to answer the same question in these two countries: in Finland which is developed and highly industrialised, and in Cuba which is developing and economically blocked.
The exhibition is based on an experiment. It shows the answers of the women who were asked to talk about a book that has for some reason been important to them. They could choose a book that has helped them a lot in their lives at a certain time, or one that has influenced them emotionally, or has shaped their world view. Or it could be a book that has affected them in another way that they themselves consider important.
We artists listened to the stories and tried to put ourselves in the place of the protagonists. We aimed to interpret with our images the significance of the book for its reader.
The list of works tells initials of the participant, her age, the author of the book and its title. After that there is the participant´s explanation of why the book has been so meaningful.
This exhibition shows only the Finnish participants; the Cuban participants will possibly be exhibited next year in the Alma Mater Gallery in Havana.
