Abstract
The article introduces the reader to Alfred T. Mahan's work "Lessons of the War with Spain" and, focusing on and using Mahan's thought as the focus of investigation, answers following questions: How and why the late nineteenth century United States decided to transform itself into a maritime power? How and why the 'Italian Mahan' Domenico Bonamico opposed this transformation? How and why England, the real maritime power, agreed to the US transformation?
