Abstract

This essay describes how civic education can occur through arts-based methods such as placemaking. The meaning of placemaking has a connection to the tradition of cultural geography and with the sense of place.1 Art can be a
method for civic education. Art can create a platform for discussion, building connections, expressing opinions and exchanging views with others.2 In this essay, I’m investigating how placemaking can be used as an arts-based method
for creating a sense of place, respect and understanding of the Arctic natural environment in Northern Lapland Finland.
