Video competencies to strenghten higher education pedagogy in Lapland

Project Details

Description

The main aim of the project is to improve the digital competencies related to the pedagogical use of videos. The target group is the teaching personnel of Lapland University Consortium (LUC). The main aim is addressed through 1) increasing teaching’ personnel’s understanding of videos and their versatile pedagogical use, 2) developing new ways
to utilize video technologies in online and hybrid teaching, and 3) producing a new digital support resource related to utilizing videos. The new support resource will be published openly on the University of Lapland’s website to be used by teaching personnel also in other Finnish higher education institutions, secondary education and free adult education.

The project can rapidly effect the digital competencies of the LUC teaching personnel. First, a new training series targeted for LUC teaching personnel will be produced. The training will be executed as a series of five webinars focusing on the pedagogically meaningful and versatile use of videos, video presentation, and the production and editing of videos. Second, nine development pilots focusing on the new and versatile use of videos will be carried out at the University of Lapland (UoL). The teachers from the four Faculties and the Language Centre of UoL responsible of the pilots will design, test, assess and re-design novel ways to use videos in teaching. Third, a digital support resource related to the pedagogical use of videos will be produced in the project. The support resource enables
learning the pedagogical use of videos independently and flexibly, as well as maintaining learned competencies.

The project results in new digital competencies of the LUC teaching personnel, new video-based learning material, as well as new, open access support material related to the pedagogical use of videos for the present and future teaching personnel of LUC. The results can have a positive affect on the teaching personnel’s labor status. Additionally, novel
and more versatile learning practices utilizing videos will be developed for LUC students. In the long run, the competencies in digital pedagogies and development readiness of LUC will be strengthened, which enables developing also other pedagogical practices utilizing digital technologies and media in higher education. The project’s indirect target groups include numerous students and the project can have a positive, indirect effect on their digital
competencies, experiences of communality, motivation to study in online and hybrid learning settings, as well as on students' commitment to their studies.

Key findings

Hankkeen tuloksena syntyy Lapin korkeaakoulujen opetushenkilöstölle uusia digitaalisia taitoja videoiden pedagogisessa käytössä, uutta video-opetusmateriaalia sekä uutta, avoimesti saatavilla olevaa tukimateriaalia videoiden pedagogisesta käytöstä Lapin yliopiston ja Lapin ammattikorkeakoulun nykyiselle ja tulevalle opetushenkilökunnalle. Tuotettu tukiresurssi julkaistaan Lapin yliopiston verkkosivulla kaikille kiinnostuneille saavutettavaksi. Hankkeen tuloksilla voidaan vaikuttaa myönteisesti opetushenkilökunnan työmarkkina-asemaan. Lisäksi hankkeen tuloksena syntyy uusia, videoita monipuolisemmin hyödyntäviä opiskelukäytäntöjä Lapin korkekoulun opiskelijoille. Hankkeen pitkän aikavälin välillisenä vaikutuksena on Lapin korkeaakoulukonsernin yleisen digipedagogisen osaamistason ja kehittämisvalmiuksien vahvistuminen, mikä mahdollistaa myösmuiden digitaalista teknologiaa ja mediaa hyödyntävien pedagogisten ratkaisujen kehittämisen korkeakoulutuksessa.

Hankkeen välillisenä kohderyhmänä on runsaasti opiskeljoita, ja hankkeella voidaan vaikuttaa myönteisesti ja välillisesti opiskelijoiden digitaalisiin taitoihin taitoihin, yhteisöllisyyden kokemuksiin, etä- ja hybridiopetuksen motivoivuuteen sekä opiskeljoiden sitoutumiseen opiskeluunsa.
