My research is located in tourism, cultural and Sámi studies and is critical and interdisciplinary. In my doctoral dissertation, I examined the cultural frames in which the countryside is constructed as a tourism destination in the images, experiences and narratives of Finnish tourists. In my later research, I have examined the construction of experience tourism cultures in internet discussion groups, the ethics of digitalized travel photography practices, the meanings given to local food in tourist cultures, multiethnic relations in the local communities of Arctic tourism destinations and the related issues of cultural appropriation, sensitivity and sovereignty, Indigenous tourism, methods and challenges of participatory planning and development, posthumanist cultural tourism, decolonial pedagogy and the potential of heritage-based local narratives to challenge culturally dominant narratives on digital platforms. I am currently interested in culture, place, Indigeneity and ethics.
