Research interests

Anniina Koivurova (D.A., Art and Design) works as a professor of art history at the University of Lapland (from 2023).

The teaching and research area of ​​the professorship is modern and contemporary art in the framework of visual arts and design. In addition, the professor's duties focus on the research of arctic and northern art.

She has previously worked in teaching and research positions in art history, contemporary art, art and culture, and visual arts education at the University of Lapland (1997–2020) and as a regional curator of the Rovaniemi Art Museum (2020–2023).

Koivurova graduated as a Doctor of Arts in 2010 at the University of Lapland. In her dissertation she studied school art lessons as a social and norm-setting space through the pictures and stories of seventh-graders, and what kind of aesthetics is possible and acceptable in school.

Koivurova has been involved in the Feeniks project, which researched the cultural reconstruction of Lapland, as well as the Recording and Studying of Children's and Youth's Art -project, where she studied the drawings, paper cut-outs and paintings of children from the reconstruction period in Lapland, as well as the Kansanapu -drawing competition material from 1946–1947.

In recent years, she has published articles on, among other things, contemporary northern artists, the activities and art of the Finnish October group in 1933–1951, and the workshop activities of the Rovaniemi Art Museum.

Koivurova has held an exhibition of her research related to the collection of Naomi Jackson Groves and participated in numerous group exhibitions with her own art (paintings, graphics, ceramics, installations).

In Lapland's regional art museum work she has curated exhibitions from the collection of Jenny and Antti Wihuri Fund and led Art Testers -activities and workshops. As an expert, she has been preparing the culture strategy of the Leader Pohjoisin Lappi group and participated in the planning and implementation of the Northern Art Network's international, arctic art research and exhibition activities.
