Organisation profile
The Multidimensional Tourism Institute is a joint expert organisation of the University of Lapland and Lapland University of Applied Sciences. We actively contribute to the development of the tourism industry and are part of shaping the futures of tourism through bold research projects and creative development.
Research
Our researchers and experts conduct research that develops and applies multidisciplinary theory, participating in responsible development of the tourism industry. Fresh information gained from conducting research creates a strong foundation for both education and the development of the tourism industry and regions. Promoting sustainable tourism and shaping the many futures of the industry through research projects and development are central to MTI’s research and development activities. The research conducted at the Universit of Lapland is focused especially on responsible tourism planning, participation, multispecies co-existence and cultural sensitivity. We examine the sustainability of tourism in the context of, for instance, hospitality, diverse operational environments and working and learning together. At Lapland UAS, creative, experiential and smart tourism solutions are the focal points in the development of sustainable tourism and competence. Expertise at Lapland UAS is a new luxury in the changing landscape of tourism. Our researchers and research groups collaborate closely with businesses, local communities and both national and international research networks – without forgetting the presence of other species living in nature.
Education
We develop tourism education with an open-minded, needs-driven and experimental approach to ensure a competent workforce for the field. Our close collaboration with the university’s social sciences, art, design and environmental education as well as with the university of applied sciences’ business, service and nature resource disciplines enables us to offer fresh and innovative study modules for students.
