Description

Lucilla Sioli, an EU official since 1997 and currently the Director for AI and Digital Industry within the European Commission, will formally lead the AI Office, as announced by the EU executive on 29 May.
The AI Office, a reorganization of an existing unit handling AI within the Commission, will comprise five main departments. Each department will be led by a director responsible for overseeing the implementation of the AI Act. The office will have a staff of 140 people, including technological experts, lawyers, and policy specialists. Around 80 of these positions still need to be filled.
The departments will focus on regulation and compliance, safety, excellence and robotics, AI for societal good, and innovation. Additionally, two advisors will focus on the scientific approach and international affairs.
Contrary to previous statements, including those made by Sioli, regarding the timing of the formal approval of the internal restructuring, the EU executive has approved the appointments and units. These changes will take effect on 16 June.
