Open innovation refers to the innovation management process utilizing internal and external sources of knowledge to innovate. Companies share and obtain knowledge within network of companies to benefit from external expertise and resources. On one hand, companies seek for efficiencies by leveraging open innovation. On the other hand, it is claimed that systemic innovations, e.g., new energy harnessing technologies, or climate change mitigation technologies require collaborative innovation processes from a network of companies, which is, open innovation.
