Impact of Reindeer Fences on Grouse Mortality – Could It Be Reduced

Activity: PresentationConference presentation

Description

Collision with fences can be source of mortality for grouse. In the reindeer herding area in the Northern Finland the total length of fences is more than 10 000 km. Moreover, there are wildlife fences along roads all over Finland.
We studied the impact of fences on grouse. Also, we experimentally studied how effectively some ways to mark fences and use of different colors reduce number of collisions.
The results could be used both when new fences are built and also when the existing fences will be modified to be safer for wildlife.
